Delhi Blast Near Red Fort Kills 8, Hours After 2,900 kg of Explosives Seized in Faridabad

A massive explosion near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort on Monday evening left eight people dead and 24 others injured, just hours after authorities in neighboring Faridabad recovered nearly 2,900 kilograms of explosive materials in what investigators are calling one of the largest seizures in recent memory.

Blast Rocks Heart of Delhi

The explosion took place around 6:52 pm near Gate 1 of Lal Qila Metro Station, close to the Red Fort’s main entrance. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by flames engulfing several vehicles.

Police said the blast originated from a car that had stopped at a red light, setting off a chain reaction that destroyed nearby vehicles and injured several pedestrians. The fire department and emergency response teams rushed to the spot within minutes.

“We heard a thunderous sound and saw a flash of fire. Cars were burning, people were screaming — it was chaos,” said Ramesh Kumar, a shopkeeper who witnessed the explosion.

Preliminary reports indicate that the intensity of the blast suggests the possible use of industrial-grade explosives, though officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause. Forensic teams and members of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have been deployed to collect samples and examine the blast site.

Eight Dead, 24 Injured

Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora confirmed that eight people lost their lives, while 24 others sustained injuries ranging from burns to fractures. Most of the victims were commuters returning home during rush hour.

Hospitals across central Delhi, including Lok Nayak and GB Pant, have been placed on high alert. Authorities are working to identify the deceased and inform their families.

High Alert Issued Across NCR

The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered heightened security in Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, given the timing of the blast — coming just hours after a major seizure of explosives in Faridabad.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was briefed immediately after the incident and is monitoring developments closely. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been informed and has sought a detailed report from central intelligence agencies.

2,900 kg Explosives Seized in Faridabad

Earlier in the day, Haryana Police, acting on intelligence inputs, raided two residential buildings in Faridabad and uncovered a staggering 2,900 kilograms of explosive materials.

The haul included 350 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, detonators, and other bomb-making components.

Police arrested Dr. Adil Rather, a medical practitioner from Jammu and Kashmir, after he was linked to the storage sites. Another doctor, Dr. Muzammil Shakeel, who worked at a private hospital in Faridabad, is also under investigation.

Officials revealed that the materials were linked to a suspected terror module connected to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGH), both banned terrorist organisations.

Possible Link Between Faridabad and Delhi Incidents

While investigators have not confirmed a direct connection between the Faridabad seizure and the Delhi blast, the proximity in timing and nature of both events has raised serious concerns among security agencies.

A senior official from the NIA said,

“It is too early to draw conclusions, but the coincidence cannot be ignored. We are examining all angles, including whether the seized material or its handlers had any link to the Delhi explosion.”

 

Hospitals and Traffic Under Strain

Following the explosion, traffic movement around Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and Daryaganj was halted. Delhi Metro temporarily closed the Lal Qila and Jama Masjid stations as a precaution.

Medical staff at nearby hospitals described the evening as “overwhelming.”

“Most victims had severe burns or trauma injuries from flying debris,” said a trauma surgeon at Lok Nayak Hospital.

Forensic and Intelligence Teams Deployed

Teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and Delhi Police’s Special Cell are analyzing debris from the site. Investigators are focusing on determining whether the blast was caused by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED).

CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to trace the vehicle’s origin and any possible accomplices.

National Reaction

Condolences have poured in from across the country. Opposition leaders have called for an immediate parliamentary briefing on the security situation.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said,

“This incident raises serious questions about security preparedness. The government must act swiftly to bring the culprits to justice.”

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities, adding,

“This is a tragic day for our city. We are in constant touch with the police and central agencies to ensure those responsible are punished.”

Authorities have urged citizens to avoid sharing unverified information on social media and to report any suspicious activity.

Investigations continue as Delhi Police, NIA, and intelligence agencies coordinate efforts to establish the motive and potential links between the two incidents.
