Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade: A Seaside Escape by Independence Day

Mumbai is on the brink of unveiling a major public space milestone—its 7.5‑km long, 20‑m wide coastal promenade, running between Priyadarshini Park and the Worli end of the Bandra‑Worli Sea Link. Designed for walkers, joggers, and cyclists, this expansive stretch offers unobstructed sea views—more than double the length of Marine Drive.

Partial Opening by August 15

According to civic officials, a major section of the promenade is slated to open by August 15, just in time for Independence Day. While the full 7.5 km walkway is ready, public access will be initially limited to approximately 5.25 km, with the remainder opening soon under the required approvals.

Key Features at a Glance

• 7.5 km length, 20 m width, hugging the sea edge between Breach Candy and Worli. 

• 20 pedestrian underpasses, spaced every ~400 m, ensure easy access across the main road. 

• The promenade is part of a larger 70-hectare open-space plan along the Coastal Road. Of this, 12 ha walkway is being built by the BMC and a 5 ha central median landscaped by Tata Sons. 

A Green Vision in Motion

• About 70% of the open space is dedicated to greenery—landscaped gardens, themed zones, and shady pockets—while the remaining 30% features paved walkways, cycle tracks, and seating areas. 

• Nine major entry points are planned along the stretch: Setalvad Lane, Tata Garden, Mahalaxmi, Lotus Jetty, Haji Ali, Atria Mall, Madraswadi (Worli), and others. 

• Discussions are underway for themed landscaped zones such as Miyawaki forests, music fountains, open-air theatres, and recreational areas.

Project Status & Progress

• The vehicular Coastal Road has been operational since 2024, with traffic flowing between Worli and Marine Drive, significantly reducing commute times to under 10 minutes. 

• Key infrastructure milestones include India's largest Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) deployment and the installation of a massive bow-arch girder near Worli Sea Link, enhancing connectivity. 

• The final segment of road and underpass, linking Prabhadevi to Worli, opened by end‑May, enabling 24×7 traffic flow.
