Tragedy on Hyderabad–Bijapur Highway: A Sobering Reminder of Road Safety

Tragedy on Hyderabad–Bijapur Highway: A Sobering Reminder of Road Safety.

On the morning of 3 November 2025, the Rangareddy district of Telangana witnessed one of its worst road tragedies in recent memory. A heavily laden tipper lorry carrying gravel collided head-on with a passenger bus of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) near the village of Mirzaguda in the Chevella mandal area, around 6 : 15 a.m. on the Hyderabad–Bijapur highway.

What Happened

  • The lorry was reportedly carrying over 50 tonnes of gravel — significantly over its permissible load of around 30-35 tonnes.

  • As per the police, the tipper lorry from Lakdaram (in Patancheru) to Manneguda was speeding and after attempting to overtake another vehicle, swerved to avoid a pothole, lost control, entered the wrong side of the road, and crashed into the on-coming TSRTC bus that was carrying 72 passengers (seated capacity approx. 35).

  • The impact was devastating: the bus’s front was crushed, large quantities of gravel spilled into and crushed the bus interior, trapping passengers.

  • Among the deceased were 19 people, including 14 women and a 10-month-old baby

  • Injured passengers (about 25) were shifted to hospitals such as the Government Hospital at Vikarabad and PMR Hospital in Chevella; many remained critical.

  • During the rescue, a police officer (CI Sridhar) was injured when a JCB machine used in debris removal ran over his leg.

Initial Response & Official Actions

  • The state Chief Minister, A. Revanth Reddy, expressed deep shock and instructed officials to rush to the site and set up a monitoring control room.

  • Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and TSRTC Vice-Chairman & MD Nagi Reddy visited the scene, met with families of the deceased, and supervised rescue operations.

  • The TSRTC, in a statement, clarified that preliminary inquiry found no fault with the bus or its driver (vehicle had valid fitness and insurance). They attributed the crash to “overspeeding by the heavily-loaded gravel tipper” on an accident-prone stretch.

  • A case under Section 106(1) of the BNS (for “death by rash and negligent driving”) has been registered, plus departmental and magisterial inquiries ordered.

Compensation Announced

  • The Transport Minister announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹7 lakh (₹5 lakh from state government + ₹2 lakh from TSRTC) for each of the deceased; and ₹2 lakh for each injured.

  • The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF): ₹2 lakh for the next-of-kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for each injured person.

  • Vehicle-insurance compensation will also apply as per scheme.

Why This Incident Matters

This tragic collision highlights several broader concerns:

  1. Over-loading and speed: The tipper lorry was carrying well over its permissible load, combined with high speed and overtaking at a risky stretch.

  2. Infrastructure and road-hazards: The report mentions a pothole that forced a swerve, indicating the presence of road-maintenance issues in such high-traffic corridors.

  3. Capacity and safety of public transport: A bus designed for 35 passengers was carrying 72 at the time, which amplifies risk in case of an accident.

  4. Emergency response difficulties: The trapped passengers under heavy gravel show how difficult rescue operations become when heavy materials are involved.

  5. Need for enforcement: Even though the bus was cleared in terms of fitness and licensing, the lorry’s condition (overload, speed) points to weak regulation/enforcement.

For the Families and Community

The human cost is enormous: three sisters studying in Hyderabad, a newly-married couple with their two-month-old baby, and families who lost multiple members are among the victims.  For the survivors and those who went to help, the images and memories of that morning will linger for a long time.

Moving Forward: What Needs to Change

  • Strict enforcement of load-limits and speed laws especially for heavy vehicles on busy state highways.

  • Regular road maintenance to remove potholes and hazards that can trigger sudden swerves.

  • Public-transport safety audits: Ensuring capacity limits are respected and emergency escape routes are available.

  • Enhanced emergency preparedness: On accident-prone stretches, resources (JCBs, rescue teams) should be pre-positioned or made ready.

  • Awareness & training: For drivers of heavy vehicles, highlighting the risks of overloaded vehicles and overtaking maneuvers.

Conclusion

The tragic loss of 19 lives in the Rangareddy crash is a stark reminder: when multiple risk-factors align (overspeeding, overload, road hazards, full capacity bus), the outcome can be catastrophic. Beyond compensation and inquiries, the real work lies in preventing such incidents, by combining enforcement, infrastructure, public-transport safety and community awareness. Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of the deceased; and we wish the injured a full and speedy recovery.
