The latest figures indicate that gold has paused after a sharp upward move earlier in August. On a per-gram basis, 24K gold was available at ₹15,388.70, while 22K gold stood at ₹14,096.05. The 18K rate was ₹11,541.53 per gram.
Gold prices remain steady today
LiveMint's latest data shows no change in the national gold rates compared with the previous day's figures. The 24K rate remained at ₹15,388.70 per gram, while the 22K rate also stayed at ₹14,096.05 per gram.
For buyers purchasing larger quantities, 10 grams of 24K gold cost ₹1,53,887, while 100 grams were valued at ₹15,38,870. In the 22K category, 10 grams cost ₹1,40,960.49 and 100 grams were priced at ₹14,09,604.90.
The 18K category was priced at ₹1,15,415.25 for 10 grams. This lower price reflects the lower proportion of pure gold compared with 22K and 24K varieties.
Gold has gained sharply in August
Although prices were flat on August 12, the broader movement during August has been strongly positive.
At the beginning of August, the 24K gold rate was ₹1,41,399 per 10 grams. By August 12, it had climbed to ₹1,53,887. That represents an increase of about 8.83% during the month so far.
The 22K category followed a similar pattern. Its rate rose from ₹1,29,521.48 per 10 grams on August 1 to ₹1,40,960.49 by August 12, also representing an 8.83% increase. LiveMint's data identifies August 12 as the highest gold-rate level recorded in August so far.
The lowest rate recorded during the month came on August 3. On that day, 22K gold was priced at ₹1,29,297.98 per 10 grams, while 24K gold stood at ₹1,41,155 per 10 grams.
Recent daily movement shows strong momentum
Gold's advance has been particularly visible since the first week of August.
On August 5, the 24K rate stood at ₹14,674.90 per gram. It moved to ₹14,873.60 on August 6 and ₹15,188.50 on August 7. After remaining unchanged over August 8 and 9, the price increased further to ₹15,303.70 on August 10.
The rate then reached ₹15,388.70 on August 11 and remained at the same level on August 12.
The 22K category showed a comparable trajectory, rising from ₹13,442.21 per gram on August 5 to ₹14,096.05 on August 12.
City-wise gold prices differ
Gold prices are not identical across all major Indian cities. LiveMint's data shows variations between markets.
In Bengaluru, Delhi and Pune, 24K gold was priced at ₹1,53,887 per 10 grams, while the 22K rate was ₹1,40,960.49.
Mumbai recorded a slightly higher rate, with 24K gold at ₹1,54,040.89 and 22K gold at ₹1,41,101.45 per 10 grams.
Chennai reported a 24K rate of ₹1,55,271.98 and a 22K rate of ₹1,42,229.14. Kolkata's rates were ₹1,55,118.10 for 24K and ₹1,42,088.18 for 22K gold.
These differences highlight why buyers should check the prevailing local rate before making a purchase.
Gold remains well above recent averages
The current price is also significantly higher than the averages recorded over several recent periods.
LiveMint's data puts the 10-day average for 24K gold at ₹1,49,594.10 per 10 grams, compared with the current ₹1,53,887. The 30-day average stands at ₹1,44,649.60, while the 90-day average is ₹1,48,685.30.
Over a one-year period, the average 24K rate is shown at ₹1,39,031.39 per 10 grams. The current price is therefore considerably above that longer-term average.
What today's gold rate means for buyers
For consumers planning to purchase jewellery or physical gold, today's unchanged rate provides a pause after the significant rise seen earlier in August. However, buyers should remember that the quoted gold rate is not necessarily the final amount payable for jewellery.
Making charges, applicable taxes and other components can increase the final purchase price. The actual amount may also vary between jewellers and locations.
For investors, the recent August movement demonstrates how quickly gold prices can change over a relatively short period. The metal has moved substantially higher from the beginning of the month, even though the latest daily session showed no movement.
As of August 12, gold therefore remains near its highest level of the month, with 24K gold at ₹1,53,887 per 10 grams and 22K gold at ₹1,40,960.49 per 10 grams.
