Sensex Ends Lower at 78,499 as Financial Stocks Drag Market; Bajaj Finance Falls Nearly 6%

India’s benchmark Sensex ended Friday’s trading session on a weaker note, declining 455.59 points, or 0.58%, to close at 78,499.17. The index remained under pressure through the session as losses in several major financial and consumer-facing stocks outweighed gains in technology, automobiles and selected large-cap counters.

The Sensex opened at 78,516.08, only modestly above the previous close of 78,954.76. During the day, it moved between 78,377.07 and 78,757.40, indicating a relatively narrow trading range compared with the previous closing level. The index eventually settled closer to the lower end of the day’s range.

Financial Stocks Lead the Decline

Financial stocks were among the biggest sources of pressure on the benchmark. Bajaj Finance emerged as the weakest contributor among the stocks listed on the Sensex page, falling ₹67.90, or 5.90%, to ₹1,082. Bajaj Finserv also declined sharply, losing ₹87.35, or 4.18%, to finish at ₹2,001.90.

ICICI Bank was another major drag on the index. Its shares declined ₹54.95, or 3.72%, to ₹1,422. Trent fell 3.54% to ₹3,000, while Axis Bank slipped 1.20% to ₹1,238.

Other notable declines included Asian Paints, which fell 1.02%, and Titan Company, which lost 0.82%. Tata Steel declined 0.69%, while HDFC Bank ended 0.68% lower. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone also finished in the red, falling 0.53%.

The performance highlights the uneven nature of the session. While several heavyweight financial names pulled the index lower, gains in technology and other sectors provided some counterbalance.

TCS, M&M Provide Support

Technology stocks were among the stronger performers during Friday’s session. Tata Consultancy Services gained ₹83.70, or 3.53%, to reach ₹2,453.70, making it the strongest positive contributor listed on the Sensex page.

Mahindra & Mahindra also posted a notable gain, rising ₹86.40, or 2.53%, to ₹3,501.40. State Bank of India added 1.03% to close at ₹1,096.05.

Tech Mahindra advanced 0.91%, while Bharat Electronics gained 0.74%. Infosys rose 0.68% and HCL Technologies added 0.59%. Reliance Industries also finished higher, gaining 0.49% to ₹1,331.55.

Maruti Suzuki India and Power Grid Corporation of India recorded smaller gains of 0.38% and 0.37%, respectively.

Sensex Remains Below Its Recent High

Despite Friday’s decline, the Sensex continues to trade within a wide yearly range. The index’s 52-week range shown on the market page stood between 71,545.81 and 86,159.02. The closing level of 78,499.17 therefore remained well below the year’s recorded high.

The index page showed a return figure of 2.27% for the selected period, while Friday’s 0.58% decline marked a setback after the previous close at 78,954.76.

The day’s performance also demonstrated how strongly individual heavyweight stocks can influence the broader benchmark. Sharp declines in Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and ICICI Bank created significant downward pressure, even as TCS, Mahindra & Mahindra and other technology and industrial names advanced.

Investors Watch Stock-Specific Moves

With the Sensex closing below 78,500, market participants will continue to watch whether financial stocks stabilise and whether the recent strength in technology counters can provide broader support to the benchmark.

The contrast between the session’s biggest gainers and losers also suggests that stock-specific movements remain important for the index. TCS recorded the largest gain among the listed positive contributors, while Bajaj Finance suffered the steepest decline.

For investors tracking the benchmark, the next trading sessions will provide a clearer indication of whether Friday’s fall represents a temporary pullback or the beginning of a broader shift in market momentum.

For now, the Sensex closed at 78,499.17, down 455.59 points, with financial stocks weighing heavily on the index while gains in technology, automobiles and selected large-cap companies helped limit the overall decline.
