DeepSeek IPO Plans Gather Pace as Chinese AI Firm Taps CITIC Securities

Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek appears to be moving closer to a public-market debut after appointing CITIC Securities to help prepare for a potential initial public offering on Shanghai’s technology-focused STAR Market.

According to people familiar with the matter, the Hangzhou-based AI company wants to begin the IPO process this year. However, several important details—including the timing of the offering, the amount it intends to raise and its valuation target—have not yet been finalised.

The development marks an important step for DeepSeek as it looks to raise more capital at a time when competition in artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly intense.

DeepSeek Moves Towards a Domestic IPO

DeepSeek’s decision to work with CITIC Securities is significant because companies seeking a mainland Chinese stock-market listing generally appoint securities firms for pre-listing guidance before formally submitting an IPO application.

The appointment therefore suggests that DeepSeek is progressing with its plans for a domestic listing, although it does not mean that an IPO has been formally launched.

The company and CITIC Securities had not immediately responded to requests for comment, according to Reuters.

For now, investors will be watching closely for further information on the potential size and timing of the offering.

Why DeepSeek Needs More Capital

DeepSeek is looking for fresh funding as the cost of competing in the global AI race continues to rise.

The company is expected to require substantial resources for computing infrastructure, AI model development, recruitment and retaining highly skilled researchers and engineers.

AI companies increasingly need access to large amounts of computing power and data-centre capacity to develop and operate advanced models. At the same time, competition for experienced AI professionals has intensified as technology companies compete to build increasingly capable systems.

DeepSeek is also facing competition from both Chinese and American AI companies, making access to capital increasingly important for its expansion.

DeepSeek's Valuation Has Climbed Sharply

The proposed IPO comes after a major funding round earlier this year.

DeepSeek raised around $7.4 billion in June at a post-money valuation of more than $50 billion, according to sources and investor filings cited by Reuters.

Founder Liang Wenfeng was also a major participant in that financing. He personally committed 20 billion yuan, while Tencent and battery manufacturer CATL invested 10 billion yuan and 5 billion yuan respectively.

DeepSeek is now in another fundraising process that could value the company at as much as 500 billion yuan, equivalent to roughly $75 billion based on the exchange rate cited in the Reuters report.

That potential valuation would put DeepSeek among the most closely watched private AI companies in China.

AI Companies Are Heading Towards Stock Markets

DeepSeek’s potential listing is part of a broader push by AI companies to access public markets.

Several Chinese AI developers are also pursuing listings as the sector requires increasing amounts of funding. Z.AI and MiniMax have already gone public in Hong Kong this year, while Beijing-based Moonshot is preparing for a potential Hong Kong listing.

The trend is not limited to China. Major US AI companies are also attracting enormous investor interest and are being linked with potential public offerings at valuations far higher than those currently associated with Chinese AI companies.

This highlights the enormous financial expectations surrounding artificial intelligence, while also showing the differences in revenue and market valuations between leading companies in China and the United States.

Talent Retention Becomes a Key Challenge

For DeepSeek, raising money is not only about building more computing infrastructure.

The company is also looking to strengthen its ability to retain important research and technical employees. Reuters reported that DeepSeek has recently lost talent to better-funded competitors, including ByteDance and Xiaomi.

An IPO could potentially give the company additional financial resources to compete for highly skilled employees and continue developing its AI technology.

For an industry where research expertise can have a major impact on the pace of innovation, retaining experienced teams has become an important strategic priority.

What Happens Next?

DeepSeek has not yet announced the final details of a Shanghai IPO. The company still needs to determine the size of the potential offering, its target valuation and the timetable for the listing.

The appointment of CITIC Securities nevertheless represents a notable development in the process.

If DeepSeek eventually lists on the STAR Market, the IPO could attract considerable attention from investors following the global AI industry. It would also provide another indication of how Chinese technology companies are using public markets to fund the enormous costs associated with developing next-generation artificial intelligence.

For Indian technology and investment audiences, DeepSeek’s potential listing will be worth watching closely, particularly as AI continues to influence global technology markets, investment strategies and competition between major economies.
