Tata Motors PV Q1 FY27 Results: Profit Falls Sharply Despite Strong Revenue Growth

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported a sharply weaker bottom line for the first quarter of financial year 2027, even as revenue continued to grow. The company posted a consolidated net profit of ₹775 crore for the April-June quarter, down more than 80% from ₹3,924 crore recorded in the corresponding period a year earlier.

The results highlight a contrasting performance across the business. Revenue from operations increased by more than 9% year-on-year to ₹95,799 crore, compared with ₹87,677 crore in Q1 of the previous financial year. However, higher costs, supply-related disruptions and weakness in the Jaguar Land Rover business weighed heavily on profitability.

Profitability Under Pressure

The decline in earnings was reflected in the company's operating margin. Tata Motors' consolidated EBITDA margin fell by 130 basis points to 7.4% during the quarter.

The company also reported an exceptional loss of ₹32 crore in Q1 FY27, compared with an exceptional loss of ₹47 crore in the year-ago quarter. Earnings per share declined to ₹2.10 from ₹6.84 previously.

A major factor behind the weak consolidated performance was the difficult operating environment faced by Jaguar Land Rover, which remains an important contributor to Tata Motors' overall business.

JLR Faces Multiple Headwinds

Jaguar Land Rover's wholesale volumes declined 9% year-on-year during the quarter. Operations were affected by temporary supply problems, including a fire at a major component supplier early in the quarter.

The business also faced disruption associated with the conflict in the Middle East. In addition, Jaguar's outgoing models were being phased out ahead of the company's upcoming product transition, adding further pressure to volumes.

As a result, JLR's quarterly revenue declined by nearly 10% to about £6 billion. The business also faced pressure from market conditions, with variable marketing expenditure increasing during the period.

Despite these challenges, JLR remained profitable. Its adjusted EBIT margin stood at 2.8%, while the company reported first-quarter profit of £109 million. The luxury vehicle maker is also preparing for a series of new product launches, including the Range Rover Electric, Range Rover Sport Electric, Range Rover GT and Jaguar Type 01.

Domestic Passenger Vehicle Business Shows Strong Growth

While the international luxury vehicle business struggled, Tata Motors' domestic passenger vehicle operations delivered a much stronger quarter.

Passenger vehicle volumes increased 46% year-on-year, significantly ahead of the broader industry, according to the company. Revenue from the passenger vehicle segment jumped 65% during the quarter.

Electric vehicles were another bright spot. Tata Motors' EV volumes increased 112% year-on-year, supported by its expanding electric vehicle portfolio, recent launches and improving demand.

The strong domestic performance indicates that demand for Tata Motors' passenger vehicle range remains healthy. However, the company said the benefit of higher volumes was partly offset by adverse foreign-exchange movements and commodity costs.

Management Remains Positive on the Road Ahead

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, described the quarter as a strong start in terms of volume growth, while acknowledging the impact of higher commodity and foreign-exchange costs.

The company is looking to build on its order book, product pipeline and continuing customer demand. Management also expects its margin-focused measures to support improvement as the financial year progresses.

The company's comments suggest that the near-term focus will be on converting strong domestic demand into better profitability while dealing with external pressures affecting its global operations.

What the Q1 Numbers Mean

Tata Motors' first-quarter performance presents a mixed picture for investors and the auto industry. Revenue growth and strong domestic passenger vehicle volumes point to healthy underlying demand, particularly in the electric vehicle segment. At the same time, the steep fall in consolidated profit demonstrates how supply disruptions, geopolitical developments, currency movements and commodity costs can quickly affect margins.

The performance of Jaguar Land Rover will remain particularly important for Tata Motors as the company navigates the transition to new products. Meanwhile, the sharp growth in its domestic passenger vehicle and EV businesses provides a potential source of support.

For the rest of FY27, the key areas to watch will therefore be JLR's recovery, the pace of new product launches, domestic passenger vehicle demand, EV growth and the company's ability to rebuild operating margins.
