US Stock Market Outlook: Wall Street Futures Edge Higher as Oil Retreats and Inflation Data Take Centre Stage

US stock futures were slightly higher on Thursday as investors balanced easing crude oil prices against ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and fresh inflation data. The market was also looking toward the Federal Reserve for signals about the direction of interest rates, while technology shares continued to support the broader recovery in US equities.

Dow Jones futures led the early move higher, while contracts linked to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 also posted modest gains. Around 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time, Dow E-minis were up 114 points, or 0.21%, while S&P 500 E-minis gained 14.25 points, or 0.18%. Nasdaq 100 futures were 28.25 points higher, representing a gain of 0.09%.

Oil Prices Pull Back After Six-Day Rally

A major factor supporting the cautious improvement in investor sentiment was the decline in crude oil prices. Brent crude futures fell around 2%, interrupting a six-session winning streak.

The retreat in oil was linked to concerns over global demand and an increase in US crude inventories. Lower energy prices can ease pressure on businesses and consumers, while also reducing one potential source of inflation for the US economy.

However, the geopolitical backdrop remained uncertain. The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy shipments, continued to experience severely reduced traffic. At the same time, negotiations between the United States and Iran over a permanent end to the Middle East conflict remained unresolved, according to the information cited in the market update.

That combination has kept energy markets and investors focused on developments in the region. Any meaningful improvement in the situation could reduce concerns about further disruption to oil supplies, while renewed tensions could quickly reverse the recent decline in crude prices.

Producer Inflation Data in Focus

Investors were also preparing for the latest US producer-price inflation figures. The Producer Price Index, or PPI, provides an indication of price pressures before they filter through to consumers and is therefore closely watched when assessing the future path of monetary policy.

The data arrived after the latest consumer inflation figures showed that US consumer prices increased 3.4% year over year in July, compared with 3.5% in June. Monthly consumer prices rose 0.1% between June and July. Before the Iran war, inflation had been running considerably lower at 2.4%.

For Wall Street, the inflation figures are particularly important because they could influence expectations surrounding Federal Reserve interest-rate decisions. Investors are watching for evidence that price pressures are cooling sufficiently to allow policymakers greater flexibility.

Nasdaq Recovery Highlights Renewed AI Optimism

Technology stocks remained a key part of the market's recovery. The Nasdaq had bounced back strongly after suffering a decline of more than 10% only two weeks earlier.

Renewed enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence has helped drive the rebound. Strong results from major technology companies and AI-focused businesses have encouraged investors to return to the sector, pushing the Nasdaq to within roughly 2% of its previous record level.

The Dow Jones and S&P 500 were also trading close to record territory, underscoring how quickly sentiment had improved following the recent period of volatility.

The strength of AI-related stocks remains an important theme for investors because expectations around future technology spending continue to influence valuations across the sector.

Cisco Shares Slide Despite Positive Outlook

Not every technology-related stock benefited from the broader optimism. Cisco Systems shares dropped nearly 6% even after the networking-equipment company issued a fiscal 2027 revenue outlook that exceeded Wall Street expectations.

The decline illustrates the selective nature of the current market. Strong corporate results have generally helped support US equities during the second half of the year, but investors have continued to react sharply when individual companies fail to meet expectations embedded in their share prices.

More than 430 companies in the S&P 500 had reported quarterly results, providing investors with a broad stream of corporate earnings information as they assess the health of the US economy and the outlook for businesses.

Investors Weigh Several Risks at Once

Thursday's market setup reflected several competing forces. Falling oil prices offered some relief on the inflation front, while expectations surrounding AI continued to strengthen technology stocks. At the same time, geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the Middle East and the future of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz remained a significant risk.

The latest inflation data could become another important catalyst for markets. If price pressures show signs of easing, investors may become more confident about the possibility of a less restrictive Federal Reserve policy. Conversely, stronger-than-expected inflation could revive concerns about interest rates staying elevated for longer.

For now, Wall Street appears cautiously optimistic, with futures pointing higher and major indexes remaining close to record levels. But with oil markets, inflation, monetary policy and Middle East developments all influencing sentiment simultaneously, investors are likely to remain highly sensitive to incoming economic and geopolitical news.
